Reticulocytes in house, with the scattergrams to read them
The H90X Vet is the top of Edan’s veterinary haematology range. It reports 46 parameters including reticulocytes, which is what separates it from the H60: anaemia can be classified as regenerative or non-regenerative without sending the sample out.
The measurement design is different from a purely impedance analyzer. A dedicated on-board channel applies a fluorescent dye that stains nucleic acids, so WBC and reticulocyte differentiation use fluorescence as well as impedance, while sheath flow impedance is used to encapsulate red cells and platelets for counting.
For interpretation Edan provides two rotating 3D scattergrams for the DIFF and RET channels plus eight 2D scattergrams, which is more graphical information than the smaller models give. The DIFF and RET dyes are embedded in the instrument and designed for easy replacement, so the dye step is not a separate handling process.

The reticulocyte channel is the dividing line in veterinary haematology: without it, anaemia cannot be classified in house. Everything above that is interpretation support.
Common questions about Edan H90X Vet Hematology Analyzer
Does it count reticulocytes?
Yes. Reticulocytes are among the 46 reported parameters, measured on a dedicated channel with a fluorescent dye that stains nucleic acids.
Why does fluorescence matter here?
Fluorescence separates cells by nucleic acid content, which is what allows reliable reticulocyte and abnormal-cell differentiation. Impedance alone gives size, not maturity.
What do the 3D scattergrams add?
Edan provides two rotating 3D scattergrams for DIFF and RET plus eight 2D scattergrams, so cell clusters can be inspected from more than one projection when a result looks atypical.
How are the dyes handled?
The DIFF and RET dyes are embedded in the instrument and designed for easy replacement, rather than being prepared as a separate reagent step.
How does it compare with the H60 Vet?
The H60 is a 5-part analyzer with 31 parameters and no reticulocyte channel. The H90X adds reticulocytes, fluorescence on two channels, sheath flow impedance and the extra scattergrams.
Which species and throughput are supported?
Edan does not publish the species list or a throughput figure on the H90X product page. Ask ICEN for the datasheet if those are tender requirements.
